Budapest - Red Bull Air Race 2007, 20 August

Budapest - Red Bull Air Race, 2007
Budapest, 20 August
Qualifying Day 19 August

Budapest remains a firm favourite location for the Red Bull Air Race and visits the capital for the fourth time. Last year, over 1 million spectators lined the banks of the Danube during the holiday weekend to watch the race. The Chain Bridge will mark the start and finish of the race and like last year, the pilots will have the daunting challenge of flying underneath the city's oldest bridge.

The Hungaroring track is situated 20 kilometres north of Budapest, so the Hungarian Grand Prix gives you the perfect opportunity to explore one of the most beautiful cities in central Europe. Known as the ‘Paris of central Europe’ and ‘the Queen of the Danube’, Budapest is adorned with beautiful architecture, most of which was built towards the end of the 19th century when the city enjoyed a boom during the industrial revolution. The four ornate bridges that link Buda and Pest were built at this time. The weather is invariably hot around race time, which only adds to the enjoyment of your visit.

“I really enjoy Budapest,” says Kimi Raikkonen. “It’s a very beautiful city, with lots to do - lots of clubs and outdoor bars. Many Finns come to the race because there are some historical links between Hungary and Finland, so it’s the closest I get to a home grand prix during the year. The track is quite slow, but it’s very physical, so it’s a good challenge over a race distance.”

Did you know? Zsolt Baumgartner is the only Hungarian to have competed in his home Grand Prix - for Jordan in 2003 and for Minardi in 2004.

Toothache In A Foreign Land (Budapest, Hungary)

by: Steve Gillman

Getting a toothache while traveling overseas can be more than just annoying and inconvenient. It can ruin a good vacation. Here are some tips for preventing a toothache before you get on that plane, and for treating it if you get one anyhow. Traveler's Dental Care First of all, don't ever go on a long trip if you have an unresolved tooth problem, or even the hint of a toothache starting. Get it taken care of by a dentist, and if there is lingering pain, get a prescription pain reliever to take with you. Have dental work done far enough in advance of your trip to be sure that all the pain is gone. It is common for a high spot on a new filling to cause severe pain days after it is put in. Any dentist can easily solve this by grinding it down - but wouldn't you rather have it done by the dentist you know and trust? Avoid doing anything that can cause toothaches or other dental problems while traveling. Avoid eating popcorn, for example. It may be one of the worst foods for damaging teeth. A toothbrush AND floss are a good idea on any trip, of course. Toothpaste may no longer be allowed on the plane, however. If you travel with only carry-on, this means you will have to remember to buy toothpaste as soon as you arrive at your destination. You can carry a bit of baking soda as an alternative as well - this will be allowed on the plane. Toothbrushes and floss are about dental problem prevention, of course, but what if your toothache starts while you're overseas? Toothache Treatment Try aspirin. Tylenol #3 is even better for a severe toothache. Antiseptics that contain benzocaine, applied directly to the irritated tooth and gum will temporarily relieve pain. Oil of cloves (eugenol) will also may help when applied to teeth and gums. Never put aspirin or other painkillers directly to gums, as they may burn your gum tissue. Sometimes tooth pain does not originate in the teeth or gums, but in the sinus cavities. It may be a sinus infection putting pressure on the gums from above. In these cases, you might have to eliminate the infection with antibiotics to get relief. Some temporary relief is possible if you can clear the sinuses by steaming (carefully) your face, or eating hot sauce. When teeth are temperature sensitive, you should obviously avoid hot and cold drinks. If it is cold outside, it will also help to breath through your nose. Breathing through the mouth brings cold air flowing over your teeth and can cause a lot of pain. I have a toothache - the inspiration for this article. Two days ago I noticed that each time we drove over a mountain pass here in Colorado, the pain intensified. Descending below 8,000 feet seemed to take the pain away. If you notice this problem, be ready when flying - not all planes are fully pressurized. Should you visit a dentist in another country? Certainly you'll have to if it is an emergency. Some toothaches are too severe to wait. You may prefer to just treat the pain until you get home otherwise. On the other hand, if the problem is simple, like a lost filling, some countries provide an opportunity for cheap dental care. Ask first, to see that the dentists are using gloves and the latest tools.

Developer of Word on way to space station - Charles Simonyi - Hungarian-born

Developer of Word on way to space station
Ex-Microsoft Hungarian-born engineer blogs through a lifelong dream

Two days after Charles Simonyi became the fifth civilian to rocket into space, the billionaire and former Microsoft engineer will link up with the International Space Station sometime Monday night, if all goes to plan.

Simonyi blasted off at 10:31 a.m. Pacific time Saturday from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, joining two cosmonauts aboard a Soyuz TMA-10 spacecraft.

At Seattle's Museum of Flight, about 200 people, including Simonyi's friends and associates, watched the launch on a large projection screen via NASA video feed. Museum supporters and board members had also been invited.

Simonyi, 58, heads Intentional Software in Bellevue, a company he founded after leaving Microsoft in 2002. But he's spent the last six months training in Russia for his journey to space.

Charles Simonyi gives a taped greeting Saturday at the Museum of Flight, where an audience watched his launch aboard a Soyuz TMA-10. The Russian craft is to dock today at the International Space Station.

The crowd at Saturday's launch party applauded as the rocket roared into the night sky, casting a blurry orange light. A camera inside the cramped spacecraft showed Simonyi, 58, and the crew. He waved and gave a thumbs up.

"This was like watching the first spaceflight you ever saw. The only thing missing was the black-and-white TV," said Loel Raymond, whose sister-in-law is Simonyi's close friend and former Microsoft colleague.

Raymond's sister-in-law, Renee, traveled to Russia to watch the launch in person, so Raymond and his wife flew to Seattle from Boston to take their young niece and nephew to see the launch from the Museum of Flight.

"You watch so many NASA flights, it gets to be ho-hum," he said. "But this kind of puts the excitement back in spaceflight."

After Simonyi reached orbit, museum president and former astronaut Bonnie Dunbar led a Russian military toast to Simonyi as everyone sipped mimosas.

Simonyi, who joined fledgling Microsoft in 1981 and led its development of Word and Excel, is spending $20 million to $25 million for the voyage. The trip was arranged through Virginia-based Space Adventures Ltd., the only company that sends private citizens into space.

But he plans to do more than observe. He plans to help conduct research, snap photos from space, and speak to students next week through ham radio at three high schools around the country, including Redmond High. He has said one goal in making this trip was to educate students about the science of space travel.

Simonyi has chronicled his experiences on his blog, charlesinspace.com, which he plans to update while in space. On Saturday, he wrote about the cosmonaut tradition of stopping the bus to the rocket tower so that the cosmonauts can urinate on the tires for good luck.

Jamie Loso, 27, of Seattle, who works for Simonyi, said her boss is down to earth and easy to talk to. She brought her parents and boyfriend to the Museum of Flight launch party.

"I just felt a little emotional because I know how excited he is about it," she said.

He's expected to circle the Earth for two days before docking with the space station. Before the blastoff, he got an e-mail from retired astronaut John Glenn, the first American in orbit.

In his last blog before the launch, Simonyi said he slept well and that his vital signs were excellent. He said he'd had fun with family and friends who came to see him at the site.

"They came to see me after visiting the pad with the rocket and reported that there was a brief rain shower and a wonderful rainbow afterwards," he said.

Simonyi was born in Hungary, but earned his doctorate in computer science at Stanford University. He donates millions of dollars through the Charles Simonyi Fund for Arts and Sciences, and is also a strong supporter of the flight museum.

Flight museum president Dunbar, who traveled five times to space and logged 50 days in orbit, said she wished she could be with Simonyi for such a special event.

"I had a friend of mine who told me 30 years ago that anything worth wanting is worth waiting for. This is something that I wanted a long time ago and I waited a whole lifetime for, and Charles has done the same thing, and I'm just so pleased for him."

Budapest's 2nd wine festival

Budapest, April 7 (MTI) - Budapest's second annual Spring Wine Festival opened on Saturday at Budapest's City Hall park and will continue throughout the Easter weekend.
Budapest deputy mayor Miklos Hagyo, opening the 30-million-forint event supported by the city council, said, "viticulture is an inalienable part of Hungary's cultural treasure, and however many times it starts to decline, it does so in tandem with the weakening of Hungarian culture; but when it really takes off again, like today, it presages a new flowering of the nation." Thirty winemakers are represented at the festival, which also includes food and cultural events. Entrance to the festival grounds is free of charge. At the opening, winemakers were given awards in three categories, as well as a special Palinka prize. (Palinka is Hungary's eau-de-vie). In the red wine category, Meszaros Cellar's 2003 Bodzasi Kekfrankos (Blue Frank) won first prize. For white, Valejjo Haraszthy Cellar's 2006 Zenit Kiralyleanyka (a local grape) was considered the best while in the desert stable, Arvay and Partners' 2003 Sweet Life Cuvee was feted. Marton and Daughters' 2006 Irsai Oliver grape palinka got the top trophy. Last year 28,000 people visited the festival and this year the organisers expect 35,000-40,000 foreign and Hungarian visitors to turn up. Chairman of the Hungarian Wine Academy Jozsef Sumegi told MTI that annual wine consumption in Hungary is around 3 million hectolitres and exports total 500-600,000 hectolitres. The producer price of wine averages at 150-200 forints per bottle and the sector generates revenues of 70-80 billion forints per year, he added. Sumegi noted that Hungarian winemakers are facing increasing competition at home. Wine imports were estimated at 60,000 hectolitres last year, which is expected to double this year.

Budapest - Easter rabbits

REUTERS

5:31 a.m. April 6, 2007

BUDAPEST – Doting Hungarian parents can now hire Easter rabbits for their children rather than buy them and avoid the tears when the furry friends end up in the pot.
Hungarian children have long been given live rabbits at Easter, a tradition not seen in other east European countries.
'Up to now it has been more usual for families to buy the rabbits and just abandon them after Easter or eat them,' said Laszlo Perjesi, managing director of the Hungarian Rabbit Product Council, told Reuters.
